Affordable Art Goes Online

The upcoming Affordable Art Auction at Browns ASR Auctions, in Jedburgh, is set to showcase new work from Borders’ artists and beyond with a 10 day exhibition and online auction.

Lockdown has limited artists’ opportunity to exhibit and sell their work and it is hoped offering an online platform will open up the opportunity to buy original art especially with many people focusing on their home at the moment.

Forty five pieces will be auctioned, including acclaimed figurative artist, Julie Barnes, offering new work exclusively for the auction and Edinburgh based Cassandra Harrison putting forward the vivid Haymarket, exhibited earlier this year at the Visual Arts Scotland’s show “Flow”.  Berwickshire artist Gill Walton has recently finished a residency at Marchmont House and includes a striking portrait The Heron, an acrylic on aluminium.

A buyer’s favourite, Inverness based Martin Irish has 5 thought provoking mixed media pieces; A Shadow If Her Former Self, Dreaming Of Angels, Miles To Go Before We Sleep, We Saw Far And Wide But Now We Are Nowhere and Returning To A Place Half Remembered.  Other exciting works from the wasps Inverness artist’s include The Games Men Play, a spray paint on canvas by Robbie Mackintosh who has 5 street art inspired pieces included and Lost, an oil and acrylic on canvas by Lativan painter, Yelena Visemirska alongside another 2 pieces.

Scottish landscapes, unsurprisingly, feature strongly again and include Kelso artist David Hay’s Sea Loch and Hill Walk, Jedburgh artist Anne White’s acrylic on canvas paintings: Shimmering Sea, Scousburgh Sands, Shetland; The Beach, Luskentyre, Harris; A Beautiful Calm Day, Fidra from Archerfield, East Lothian; Living on the Edge, St Abbs from Coldingham Bay, Machair in Bloom, Hushinis, Harris, Sunset Over Loch Shiel and Subtle Sunset, Ruber Law and Duns based Lida Hatrick’s oil and oil pastel works.

Individual estimates for the work to be sold at the auction range from £75 to £1,500.

Ronan Brown from Brown & Turner said:

The art community has been particularly badly affected by the events of 2020 and 2021, with galleries closed and events where artists could have sold their work cancelled. Therefore, we are delighted to offer this exhibition and online auction of original work to offer artists another platform to showcase their work and give buyers the chance to view in person or online, and purchase some stunning pieces of affordable art.

An online catalogue detailing each of the pieces for sale available from the Browns ASR website and viewings are available from 24 May – 3 June by appointment.  An e – catalogue and more information on the work can be obtained by calling 01835 863445 or emailing info@brownsasr.co.uk.

Architect’s Desk returns to the building it designed.

An elegant George III Mahogany Architects Desk, attracted strong interest in the room and online, realising over £2,000 when the hammer dropped.  The table previously belonged to Sir Joseph Paxton, the Great Grandfather of the vendor and famous for building the Crystal Palace, where the table will now return to.

Chinese pieces continued to prove popular with Chinese bidders.  A Chinese style Hardwood Open Bookcase had several bidders interested online, pushing the price over £1,200 when the hammer went down.  A Chinese Brass Koro, of cylindrical form with reign marks to the underside, realised £1,100 while a Chinese School circa late 19th/ early 20th century “Figures Round a Table, with Female Figures to the Foreground” watercolour on silk sold for double its auction estimate (£150 – £200) for over £350.

Antique furniture attracted strong prices with a Regency Gillows style Mahogany Sofa Table going to the room for more than double its estimate (£150 – £200) for £500.  An Oak Haberdashery Style Open Cabinet had several bidders online with the hammer dropping at £400 and an Antique Chippendale style Mahogany Armchair trebled its lower estimate realising over £300.

A Second Chance Timed Auction will now run from 17 – 23 May, with the first lot closing at 8pm, followed by an Affordable Art Auction opening on 24 May – 3 June.  Viewing can be booked by calling 01835 863445 or info@brownsasr.co.uk.  To browse and bid visit: https://brownsasr.co.uk/auctions

Exciting Times Ahead

Browns ASR are delighted to be embarking on building a new saleroom & storage facility at Wester Fodderlee Farm, near Bonchester Bridge.  The new saleroom will be a clean open space allowing the volume of sales to increase, improvements in presentation and customer experience.

The storage facilities will be custom built with Redcare Alarm Systems and CCTV and allow more flexibility in storing items for household and document storage, as well as storing goods for future sales.

Ronan Brown explains “This is all hugely positive and we are in a very good position to expand the catchment area for sales, increase our storage capacity and expand the removals side of the business.”

The first auction of 2021, due to COVID restrictions, showed a busy online market with exceptional strong prices throughout.  The enforced move to online only auctions has reduced buyers fear of internet bidding and encouraged more bidders to look at auctions.  Browns ASR continue to accept items for upcoming auctions with complimentary collections offered in the Borders, Edinburgh and Northumberland.
