Angus’ Highlights | August 2022

August 16, 2022

‘Veni, Vidi, Vici’…I came, I saw, I conquered. A famous quote attributed to the most famous Italian, Julias Caesar.

You too can come, see and win at the saleroom!…and this month bid for a very rare copy of ‘The Twelve Caesars’ written by Suetonius in AD 121. Our edition published in one volume in 1610 is a wonderful opportunity to own an influential and historical treasure. The book is recognised as one of the most important sources for lives of the emperors of Rome. Not only Julias Caesar, it includes Augustus, Claudius, Nero and the utterly mad Caligula…whom apparently married his own horse!

The late summer auction is packed with interesting and useful lots, including a good selection of jewellery. This includes a splendid diamond and sapphire tiered cluster engagement ring mounted on platinum and in excellent clean condition. At £500-800 it is fantastic value for anyone looking to propose this month.

Bronze Statues

There is a wide range of practical and attractive furniture to choose from in this sale. A personal favourite this month is an unusual Victorian footstool. While the frame is conventional, solid and effective, the whole rectangular top is covered with an impressive beadwork cushion. The finely mounted glass beads set creatively into a picture of roses within an attractive gadrooned border. Beadwork like this was popular in the 19th century, but this example is larger than most.

There are a number of decorative bronzes to choose from. This includes a fine pair of bronze putti musicians. ‘Putti’ is a term commonly used to refer to small naked child figures. Sometime they can be winged and Cupid is usually portrayed in this manner. They are often described as instruments of love. The pair in this sale are after originals by the renowned French sculptor Auguste Moreau. The casting is excellent and the lovely brown bronze patina remains lustrous. They deserve a fine mantel to play upon. Other bronzes include an impressive Lion, a prancing Horse and a prowling Panther…a veritable menagerie of fabulous beasts.

As usual we have a good mixed selection of artworks. This includes the opportunity to buy all twelve of Arthur Boris Klien’s humorous coloured prints of dogs in Paris. Many a washroom or pub wall has one of two of these works with dogs lining up to make use of a lamppost, but rarely are all found together. These are all signed in pencil by the artist and in excellent condition. Perhaps they will make you smile too.

We have a very fine Georgian bookcase, some lovely Regency rosewood tables and many other interesting lots of furniture to grace your home. Take a look online at our fully photographed catalogue. You can contact our valuer for further information or condition reports. We are collecting now for the next sale in September.
