Angus’ Highlights | December 23

December 1, 2023

We have a wide selection of lots in our last ever live auction at the old saleroom. We have been quietly renovating buildings 5 minutes away and look forward to welcoming you to our purpose built new home in 2024.

Everybody likes Lotto, well this month you too can win big! Fill your hall or living room with the joy and colour of a huge carpet. Named not for where it was made, but after a famous Renaissance Italian artist.  Lorenzo Lotto painted such a carpet into one of his masterworks and they have been named Lotto carpets since.

Lot 112 was not made in Italy, but more likely Turkey. The original designs coming from West Anatolia on the warm Aegean coast. The whole rug centre or ‘field’ is filled with rigid arabesques and branching palmette designs, known as “Arabesque Usher”. At 5 metres long it will need a large space, but with a Christmas tree above and a stack of presents below, the house will simply glow!

It’s that time of year again and we are all wondering if we can escape writing the annual mass posting of Christmas Cards. Sir Robin Philipson, one of Scotland’s most dramatic, colourful and exciting artists in the mid 20th century had the same problem, and took it a stage further. Lot 100 contains three examples of his splendid home produced Christmas cards, printed as lithographs and sent out to friends. We have examples from 1970, 1979 and 1989 to choose and to a collector of his art they will look most excellent perhaps framed together.

This month we have a pretty wide selection of small contemporary art pieces, many by Scottish female artists. They are part of an estate sale of a local artist, whom like to surround her studio with the work of others as inspiration. Well worth a look through the 50 or so works we have on offer.

As usual the monthly sale contains a wide range of furniture, including Ercol bookcases, chest and cabinets of all sorts, not to mention a very wild garden bench. We also have LP’s, silver, jewellery and all sorts of china including some very useful an attractive lamps.

It’s nearly Christmas, so find a stocking filler or buy one of our wicker baskets to use as a hamper.

As we wave goodbye to 36 High Street, we look forward to welcoming in 2024 in our new saleroom with a wider range of auctions.  Please do get in touch if you are using the winter days to do some sorting out!

Our May auction proved a diverse mix of old and modern, with Lot 161, a group of rather splendid local photographs, selling above estimate and proved to be a top lot in the sale yesterday.
