Angus’ Highlights | November 23

November 1, 2023

As I write this month’s highlights blog, we prepare to enter the ‘long dark’ and Halloween beckons. The engineers at Stonehenge are busy moving the stones again to bring us back to Greenwich Mean Time!

To light those long evenings we can offer you a wide array of modern and vintage lighting,  not to mention a rather dramatic pair of large plated candelabra in the form of huge modernist obelisks, each with five sconces for your colourful candles of choice. Lot 61 is a bargain at £150.

Those long winter evenings are perfect for a good read, so you will need a lovely comfortable armchair. I recommend Lot 126, a pair of fine George III style Gainsborough armchairs. These examples made with strong mahogany frames in the late 19th century and will last another if you are kind to them. £500 for the brace.

To hold your books, we have many bookcases, but I rather like Lot 124, a slightly unusual multi purpose breakfront bookcase, the top with adjustable shelves to hold your Halloween horror collection or Mills & Boon if you prefer! The mahogany bookcase will last a life time and look elegant in whatever room you present it.

Naturally you need a glass of fine claret to relax by the fireside with, and we have a myriad of fine crystal glasses to choose from, including so excellent decanters and claret jugs. Glassware is unbelievable undervalued at auction and grab yourself a bargain…or several!

Finally to set the scene, Lot 121, is a quality but unusually compact baby Grand Piano, so you can keep it hidden in a discrete corner and play away when the mood takes you, or use the top for your growing collection of family photographs.

Next month is likely to be the last auction at the old saleroom in Jedburgh. We are moving to new premises nearby, purpose built and far better equipped for modern auctioneering. We look forward to welcoming you to our new salerooms shortly. In the meantime if you have any fine collectable items you want us to consider for our first ‘Collectors’ sale. We hope to include Fine Art, Jewellery, the rare and unusual. Our valuers will be delighted to discuss your collections at anytime.
