A monster sale with a monster result! This month we held our final auction at our old premises, and before moving to the new saleroom in 2024 we had a good pre-Christmas clear out, both for us and our clients.

Lot 55 was a genuine monster, a Chinese Qilin, a strange mythical creature who often was said to appear when a great ruler was either born or died. They take many forms, but all have hooves, and usually scales like a dragon. In Western culture they may have been re-imagined as unicorns, but it is thought they may have been originally influenced by giraffes. Our example was striding confidently below a vibrant sun and was probably embroidered onto a dramatic piece of Chinese clothing or perhaps a wall hanging. A large fragment remains and was framed for the wall. There was significant interest driving the price well over our estimate to £900 (including Buyers Premium).

With Christmas arriving very shortly, many small and pretty lots sold easily, and Lot 66a a useful and attractive 9 carat gold chain sold well above the estimate at £480. Hopefully to re-appear under the Christmas tree shortly.

It won’t be long before we are all looking forward to our gardens again. Lot 130 proved very sought after by several bidders. Three very tall wrought iron obelisks, for growing climbing plants upon, were both well made and complimented by three amusing ducks atop each. They were unsurprisingly very popular and soon exceeded estimate to sell for nearly £400.

Tom Scott, a regular visitor to our saleroom, proved once again to be highly sought after locally. A rather lovely small watercolour painted during wartime in 1917 charmed bidders to sell a little over estimate at £270. It depicted a man with is shotgun and his faithful dog walking along a snowy path. A scene as valid today as in 1917.

May we take this opportunity to wish all our vendors and bidders a very Merry Christmas and we look forward to welcoming you to our warm new ‘saleroom with a view’ only a few miles away in 2024.
