“The Sea, The Sea” a shout of exultation by the ancient Greeks in 410BC on encountering the Black Sea….a different sea perhaps, but a shout of exultation nonetheless for Lot 67 in this months rather eclectic sale of Aniques and Collectables. A splendid Victorian case of various sea shells, beautifully laid out in concentric patterns within a folding octagonal case.

Making such shell cases in the 19th century was a popular pastime, rather like those that glue air fix tanks and ships together today! Found under a chest of drawers in a Scottish Borders country house as part of a recent clearance, this example was sadly in very poor condition, the case needing urgent attention. The lot also included a rather unusual wax flower table centrepiece, likely made about the same time. Priced conservatively in view of the condition, the lot sailed merrily away, considerably above estimate for nearly £2000.

Another delight proved to be Lot 74. A small Victorian silver match case, this had been enamelled with an excellent pack of hounds to great effect. Clearly a number of bidders were keen to secure it and the quarry was soon at bay for a little over £1000.

A tiny group of well cut stones arrived in a small bag. The vendor thought they might be diamanté….but on testing proved to be the real deal. Small, yet clear, well cut and ready for setting in some new jewellery design the lot shone at £1300, comfortably above the estimate. Do take care when clearing drawers, you never know what might be hiding!

Amongst the ceramics this month, Lot 62 stands out. A fine pair of 1980’s Royal Crown Derby decorative two handled urns. Porcelains painted in the English Imari palette by the factory are always sought after. These were in truly excellent condition and the number of pre-sale condition reports we received suggested that buyers were keen to secure them. Doubling the estimate to sell for nearly £1200 was a satisfying result.

Overall the auction was a great success with the large majority of lots finding new owners. Do contact our valuation team should you be interested in selling a single item or an entire house contents. We may be local, but the results are World class.
