March Hammer Highlights

March 29, 2023

Our March sale turned up a few unexpected winners amongst the many and varied lots.

Lot 13 on the face of it looks very mundane and ordinary, but it goes to show that well looked after pieces can sometimes put a smile on the owners face on sale day. A couple of pairs of good quality gold damask curtains flew past our valuers modest estimate of £40…to sell for nearly £400. The quality, interlining and excellent condition clearly attracted someone with the perfect windows for them to fill.

Top billing this month in the furniture section was lot 196, a very large and fine Dowry chest. This was likely made in Ceylon while the British were campaigning in India and the far East. Open the heavy lid and you are assailed by the sweet and slightly intoxicating perfume of camphor. The wood has a natural resin that gives off fumes to ward off insects from consuming it, with the helpful side affect of keeping clothes moths at bay. This very large chest came from a Scottish Borders estate and will need a big hall to accommodate it. The hammer fell at a shade over £1000 (with Buyers Premium).

Another success this month was a rather comfy and effective Ottoman. This large and well padded seat was covered in velvet and in rather a dirty state, but we suspect with a good brush and steam clean will be as good as new and fit for a King. It sold well above estimate at £430 (including Buyers Premium).

Someone’s finger will be all a glitter this week. A very attractive white diamond cluster ring set in platinum was made in a fashionable and timeless setting. It’s always worth checking every sale closely, lot 91, escaped within estimate and was a steal for the buyer at £660 (including Buyers Premium).

There were too many other lots to mention this month that sold within or above our estimate, which was over 91% sold on the day. The few remaining lots can still be purchased last minute in our ‘Second Chance’ auction this week, available online.
